If Tim Tebow leaves Jets, where should he go next? - USA TODAY (blog)

For the better part of six months, many NFL observers and fans were wondering when (not if) Tim Tebow would supplant Mark Sanchez as the New York Jets' starting quarterback.

It's taken less than a week for the question to shift to "Are Tebow's days with the Jets numbered?" following Sanchez's three-touchdown passing day in the Jets' 48-28 Week 1 win over the Buffalo Bills.

"He will want to move on. The one thing about Tebow is he is the quintessential team player. He would never do anything that is going to undermine the team. But he's football-aholic. It's in his blood," an NFL source who doesn't necessarily seem connected to Tebow told (New York) Daily News' Gary Myers while operating under the assumption Sanchez will continue to strengthen his grip as the starter and that No. 15 will get antsy for an opportunity elsewhere.

The source believes Tebow remains, well, heckbent on being a starter in the league and isn't ready to accept full-time back-up duties, situational status or a position switch.

Said Myers' source: "There comes a point where they get it and realize, 'This is who I am' and just accept that role. Tebow is not there yet."

So let's play along and ask which team might be the best fit for Tebow:

  • Arizona Cardinals: Tebow's accuracy issues make him a less-than-ideal fit for Ken Whisenhunt's offense, which was at its best with the pinpoint passing of Kurt Warner. Still, perhaps no team is more unsettled at the position.
  • Buffalo Bills: Head Coach Chan Gailey favors athletic, mobile quarterbacks. He's spent much of the summer looking at Vince Young and Tarvaris Jackson as backups for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who continues to be plagued by INTs. And with RBs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller under contract, Tebow could give the Bills quite a formidable option running game. He might also boost the sometimes sagging attendance in Orchard Park, N.Y.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars: Admittedly, second-year QB Blaine Gabbert seems to be turning the NFL corner. But speculation linking Tebow to his hometown team -- he almost went to the Jags instead of the Jets in March -- isn't likely to die down.
  • Kansas City Chiefs: Like the Cards and Bills, they also boast a deep backfield that might help best supplement Tebow's skill set. And this is a job that might open up Matt Cassel doesn't regain his 2010 form.
  • Minnesota Vikings: They're also evaluating a 2011 first rounder (Christian Ponder) who produced mixed results as a rookie. With the reduced value of rookie contracts, it becomes much easier to cut ties with those who don't produce and move in a new direction. And like the aforementioned teams, the Vikings have a strong ground game and a capable No. 1 receiver (assuming Justin Blackmon assumes the role in Jacksonville). And what could be better than an ex-Gator battling an ex-Seminole to start?
  • Oakland Raiders: How long will Carson Palmer be around? Would new Head Coach Dennis Allen, who was on the Denver Broncos staff last season when Tebow sparked the team's playoff surge, be open to a Tebow reunion? Wouldn't Tebow at least be an upgrade over dual threat project Terrelle Pryor? Of course the real question lies with new GM Reggie McKenzie, who came from the Green Bay Packers, an organization that valued Aaron Rodgers' passing acumen.
  • Jets: Let's not forget them. Sanchez could always regress, and some analysts think Tebow is perfect for a team that wants a run-oriented approach.
