Coming into Sundayâs matchup against the Buffalo Bills, questions were abound for New York Jets fans on what an offense which was anemic during the preseason could do when it mattered. Those questions were answered after they dismantled the Bills in a 48-28 win. More importantly, any thoughts of a quarterback controversy were squashedâ¦for now. It is New York after all.
For fantasy owners, any questions on if you should start Tim Tebow were answered as well. The hybrid quarterback would have helped you if you were in a tie game, and thatâs about it. He went out with a whimper, racking up a whole 1.10 fantasy points on the day. Coach Rex Ryan toyed with the Tebow faithful by putting him in the game on the first play of their first offensive possession, lining him up at the tight end position. As you can tell, that wound up producing nothing. Throughout the rest of the game, he took six snaps as the Wildcat quarterback, attempting zero passes but rushing five times for eleven yards. Things got so bad that in the second quarter, the boo birds came out.
Welcome to New York Mr. Tebow. I wonder if youâre wishing you wouldâve signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then again, Blaine Gabbert looked as if he was a new man on Sunday.
Bottom line is maybe we all read too much into it. Rex Ryan said from the start he planned on getting Tebow 10-15 snaps a game and using him in a variety of formations which defenses would have to account for. Thatâs exactly what happened, Tebowâs highlight of the day coming in the fourth quarter when he lined up for a kick return with the all-hands team and recovered an onside kick.
The regurgitated line that Tebow is âa football playerâ turned out to be true this week, and it doesnât bode well for fantasy owners. The competition did what it was supposed to, pushing Mark Sanchez to one of his best performances weâve seen in a while. Thereâs no doubt who is the quarterback owners should have on their rosters. Itâs Sanchez, hands down.
But letâs not get ahead of ourselves. Itâs only one game, and there is still plenty of time for the quarterback controversy to get a second wind. Maybe itâs what Tebow did for fantasy owners last year, maybe itâs his potential, or maybe itâs just the fact weâve seen Sanchez perform like this before, only to lay and egg the next week. Thereâs something about Tebow which wonât let us disregard him no matter what his performance results.
Should he be on your roster? No! Why not use that roster spot on a player which could actually help you win games?
Will those who have him on their roster keep him there? Yes. Why drop a player that could potentially help you win games, and maybe even start at quarterback if injury strikes or Sanchez hits a rough patch?
And there you have the Tebow dilemma. I have him on my keeper league roster, and Iâm sticking with him. It might not be wise, but heâs a good âfootball playerâ and things can change in a New York minute.
