ORWIGSBURG - Pam Tebow, mother of Heisman Trophy winner and NFL player Tim Tebow, came to Schuylkill County on Sunday as part of the Touchdown 2012 fundraiser at the Blue Mountain High School auditorium for the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Schuylkill County.
Care Net, a nonprofit ministry organization, is looking to raise $100,000 to secure its current location, 110 S. Centre St., Pottsville, which has been put up for sale.
"She definitely has a pro-life message and is here to help us raise funds to keep a lot of the programs we have going," Cheryl Cresswell, director of the center in Pottsville, said before the event Sunday afternoon.
Pam Tebow began speaking for women's groups, nonprofit fundraisers and various events throughout the country after she was given a national platform to encourage the pro-life message when ESPN aired a portion of an interview with her that focused on her refusal to abort "Timmy" despite being advised to do so by her doctors. She is also writing a book on parenting.
"This is a ministry of service," Tebow said Sunday. "Scripture said do not just look out for your own interests, but look out for the interests of others. That's what Care Net is doing."
In 2010, her son funded a Super Bowl commercial featuring Pam Tebow that celebrated family and life. Pam Tebow said, according to a Barna survey, the commercial resulted in 5.5 million people "having to rethink their stand on abortion."
"We need volunteers in this pro-life ministry," Tebow said. "Care Net needs volunteers. God himself will exalt you as you serve in this ministry."
Care Net is a life-affirming crisis pregnancy center assisting women in unplanned pregnancies with free pregnancy testing, parenting and material support without prejudice and has been serving communities Schuylkill County for more than 13 years.
Cresswell said the organization has grown substantially in the last year and recently sponsored a 5K marathon with about 150 participants.
"It's an amazing thing," Cresswell said. "We want to put our heads to it and really try to accomplish something."
Tickets for the event sold for $10. Cresswell said more than 400 tickets were sold before Sunday.
Cresswell said Sunday's event was the organization's largest fundraiser of the year as it replaced the annual banquet.
According to Care Net Schuylkill's website, the organization's mission is "to offer a safe place for women and their families to explore their options related to pregnancy and their future" by "being a trustworthy, compassionate, faith-based provider of confidential, loving support."
The center provides additional services such as parenting education, post-abortion counseling, biblical counseling, abstinence education, teen life skills and community referrals. The center also has a sexual integrity group and a men's ministry.
Care Net established The New Life Shoppe in 2008 at the center to raise funds and promote the organization's services. Open to the general public, the shop has diapers, clothing and other items available.
Anyone looking to volunteer or support Care Net and the New Life Shoppe and its mission to assist women and teens can call 570-624-7244. Donations of diapers and clothing are also always welcome.
