Tarkenton, who spent a decade in the NFL playing quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants, said Denver is the team to watch this season.
Watch the exclusive interview here.
âWell, right now, the best team in football, after one week, is the San Francisco 49ers,â he said. âGoing in, they had the deepest roster, good defense, good offense, a lot of skilled players, a lot of great defensive players and, right now, if I had to pick two teams for the Super Bowl, Iâd pick the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers.âThe Denver Broncos, they went eight and eight, went to the Championship game with Tim Tebow as quarterback, and I love Tim Tebow, but heâs not a quarterback. Theyâve got Peyton Manning and they beat Pittsburgh in opening week last week by about two touchdowns and Peyton looks like Peyton. Heâs got a better supporting cast than heâs ever had. Denver is the team to watch.â
Tarkenton, also known for his commentary on Monday Night Football, called Tebow a âgreat young manâ but said heâs ânot a major league quarterback.â
âHeâs a hybrid,â he said. âHe played nose guard in high school as a freshman. Heâs a big kid. A big, strong kid and he doesnât have the throwing ability that he needs to have at the professional level and theyâll make him a hybrid type guy in New York and give him five to 10 snaps a week but, and I say this in all respect, heâs got a lot of talent. If youâre ever looking for other areas of interests, whether thatâs politics or not, heâd be great in politics or anything he goes in because heâs believable.â
As to the Vikings, a team Tarkenton took the Super Bowl three times only to lose to the Dolphins, Steelers and Raiders, he said they are in a âgrowing mode.â
âTheyâve got a Florida State quarterback there and heâs off to a good start,â he said. âBut they donât have the talent to really compete on a championship level. Theyâre in a tough division and the Bears and the Detroit Lions and Green Bay will probably dominate that division.â
