Jets links: Matt Slauson beats Vlad Ducasse; Mohamed Sanu mimics Tim Tebow ... - The Star-Ledger - NJ.com

The Jets will travel to Cincinnati tomorrow to take on the Bengals in their first preseason game, where they'll have a chance to beat up on another team instead of each other. For more, here's NJ.com's aggregation of Jets team news from around the web:
  • Matt Slauson appears to have won the Jets' left guard competition, according to The Star-Ledger's Jenny Vrentas. Slauson is the youngest player on the Jets' OL, which is the 8th oldest in the NFL - More on that later today.
  • Tim Tebow had his best day at Jets training camp yesterday per Tim Bontemps of the NY Post. He hit Patrick Turner on a deep ball that went for a 60 yard TD. Beaten on the play was the self-proclaimed 2nd best WR on the team, Antonio Cromartie. Tebow beat a similar "zero-blitz" look the Jets showed him last year when he played for the Broncos, when he ran around Eric Smith for a late, game-winning TD. Jenny Vrentas reports that Tebow could get 2 quarters of action tomorrow during the Jets' first preseason game.
  • Rutgers alum and Bengals 3rd round draft pick Mohamed Sanu mimicked Tim Tebow in Bengals practice yesterday to help them prepare for the Jets tomorrow. (Picture via the Bengals' Twitter feed).
  • Mark Sanchez is "more of a leader than he ever was before," says tight end Dustin Keller of his QB, via Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News. “It’s harder for a first, second or maybe even a third-year guy to talk to the whole team,” Keller said. “When you got guys that are playing 8, 10, 12 years, it’s hard to lead (if you’re a lot younger). If you look at Aaron Rodgers … it was his fourth year until he actually started. I think that’s the point where you become a voice in the locker room and people really respect what you have to say. I think people respected Mark before, but more so this year. He’s a true veteran. And guys respond to that.” I don't doubt that Sanchez is getting a little more respect because he has been in the league for a few years now and it's nice that Dustin is talking up his teammate, but the comparisons to Aaron Rodgers are premature. Jenny Vrentas also had a similar story on Sanchez' leadership today, including a note that Rex Ryan "considers Sanchez the unquestioned leader of the offense."
  • Also in Dustin Keller news, Jenny Vrentas reported that Keller noted that there is no bad blood between himself and CB Antonio Cromartie in the wake of their on-field altercation on Tuesday.
  • TheJetsBlog.com has an interesting read on the versatility of some Jets players on offense: More than ever, players seem to be taking on hybrid roles in this new Sparano offense.
  • The Jets made a roster move yesterday, per the team website. They waived RB John Griffin and signed RB Jeremy Stewart, who was claimed off waivers from the Eagles. I had a chance to see Stewart at Eagles training camp. The Eagles don't currently have sure thing at FB, so that's where they worked out Stewart. While he looked good catching the ball, and appeared to have more speed than the other fullbacks, it was simply not a good position fit for him at the pro level since he was only playing at around 220 lbs. He'll likely get a chance to play RB with the Jets.
  • The Miami Dolphins are of course on HBO's Hard Knocks this year, and as one of the Jets' AFC East rivals, it should fun to look in at them from time to time throughout the preseason. ESPN AFC East blogger James Walker listed the highlights of the first episode. Most noteworthy, at least from a football standpoint, were the struggles of CB Vontae Davis, and David Garrard being named the early #1 QB on the depth chart. The Jets play the Dolphins Weeks 3 and 8 this season.
