NEW YORK (WFAN) â" Boomer Esiason thinks the Jets are making a âmajor mistakeâ with Tim Tebow as the teamâs backup quarterback.
The former Jets signal caller and current WFAN morning show co-host offered a simple solution early Monday morning: âCut Tim Tebow.â
âIâm just telling you right now, I would (cut him), and Iâll tell you why I would,â Esiason said alongside âBoomer & Cartonâ radio partner Craig Carton. âItâs not in any way, shape or form â" I think â" benefiting this team.â
Tebow was 1 of 4 during Saturdayâs Green & White scrimmage, his lone completion a short pass on a fake punt. He ran three times for 14 yards and had two fumbled quarterback-center exchanges.
Sanchez, who was 11 of 16 for 82 yards, said afterward that âTim ran the ball really well.â OK, perhaps thatâs what the Jets brought him here to do. Tebow was also magnificent during goal-line drills last week at training camp in Cortland.
But can the wildcat-type offense be successful if Tebow canât make the league respect his passing game?
âAll you have to do is watch him throw the ball,â said Esiason. âJust watch him.â
Then thereâs the circus-like atmosphere, though not exactly new to coach Rex Ryanâs team, surrounding Tebow and the Jets.
âI just think this whole thing â" at least from my perspective right now in relation to who Mark Sanchez is, your starting quarterback â" is a major mistake,â Esiason said.
Boomer called for the Broncos to cut Tebow after a particularly rough game last season, during which the quarterback got mocked and flat-out rocked. Of course, he went on to lead Denver to the playoffs and a first-round shocker over Pittsburgh.
âYou can say whatever you want about Tim Tebow,â said Esiason. âHe played some of the worst football that any quarterback has ever played in the history of the game last year at times.â
Despite Tebowâs popularity among fans and success leading late-game drives, Denver saw Peyton Manning as an upgrade and shipped the 24-year-old to New York this offseason.
âDo you think that John Elway knows a little bit about playing quarterback in this league?â Esiason said of the Broncosâ executive vice president of football operations, whose Hall of Fame resume includes two Super Bowl championships.
Esiason doesnât like Tebowâs game much, but conceded he could have a place on a Jets team plagued by locker-room issues last season, not to mention a couple tense moments already this summer.
âThe fact is ⦠you may want Tim Tebow on this team specifically for one reason and one reason only,â said Esiason, âand thatâs the character issue.â
Hey hey, ho ho, Te-bow has got to go?! Make your case for or against the backup QB in the comments belowâ¦
