CORTLAND â€" Now that President Obama has publicly admonished the Jets for their acquisition of Tim Tebow, more critics are coming out of the woodwork.

Monday morning on “The Boomer and Carton Show” on WFAN, former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason made it clear he’s not a fan of the move.

“You want to know if I were the Jets what I would do?” Esiason asked. “I would cut Tim Tebow. I really would.

“And I’ll tell you why I would,” Esiason added. “Because it’s not in any way, shape or form, I think, benefiting this team."

Over the weekend, Joe Namath also criticized the Jets’ decision to bring in Tebow.

Tebow was asked about Esiason’s comments after practice on Monday.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Mr. Esiason,” said Tebow. “I know he was a great player here, and I just wish him nothing but the best in his announcing, and God bless him.”

This kind of criticism is nothing new for Tebow.

“I’ve pretty much heard a lot of it from when I was in high school and they said I couldn’t be a high school quarterback,” the backup QB said. “When I was in college my first year they said, ‘You’ll never play quarterback and you can never win a championship and you can never play in the NFL.’”

Tebow said he often uses doubters as a form of motivation.

Esiason ultimately said he would consider keeping Tebow â€" but not for his talents as a quarterback.

“One thing that I would say is because you’ve got a bunch of lunatics in that locker room, as evidenced by the words of Antonio Cromartie,” Esiason said, “the reason you may want to have Tim Tebow on this team, specifically, (is) for one reason and one reason only and that’s the character issue.”

Separate from the violence on the sideline Monday, the defense caused more than enough destruction during team drills.

Tebow and Sanchez were “sacked” a combined nine times in 11-on-11 drills while the defense worked on blitzes. Tebow in particular felt the brunt of the imaginary hits, getting sacked six times, including two sacks each by Quinton Coples and Damon Harrison.

“Hopefully I’m better when the lights are on and it’s for real and it’s pressure,” said Tebow.

Asked how many “sacks” he could have escaped from in a live-hitting situation, Tebow said, “It’s hard to say, because they have to pull up and at the same time I pull up because they pull up. That’s so hard to judge.”

Tebow had three completions on eight attempts. Sanchez was 5-for-11 with three sacks.
