Tim Tebow befuddles Rex; talks Derek Jeter, Colorado tragedy - USA TODAY

Tim Tebow created a stir Saturday with a shirtless run off the practice field. His coach, Rex Ryan, was caught off guard by a reporter's question about the seemingly innocuous event." I'm not there yet," Ryan said in regards to his shirtless readiness. Ryan has lost over 100 pounds since his lap-band surgery.

While Rex may not be ready to follow Tebow on a bare-chested job, the Jets backup quarterback talked about a certain shortstop he's following.

Tebow admires New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter for the way he has handled the brighter glare of the New York City sports stage.

Jeter has suggested Tebow not read the tabloids or listen to talk radio.

"Derek Jeter's obviously done a really great job and it starts with how he plays on the field,'' Tebow told USA TODAY Sports. "He's a huge role model here in New York and all over the world. I haven't talked to him, but I know everything he represents and there's a lot of things I can learn from someone like that.''

Tebow has embraced his arrival in New York as a chance to promote his foundation dedicated to mission work and helping build hospitals for children.

"This is New York, the greatest city in the world and such a platform here,'' Tebow says. "I'm very excited about that as well.''

Denver is also still on Tebow's mind. He was saddened by the theater shootings in Aurora, Colo.

Tebow's older brother, Peter, was close with some of the people inside the Park Meadows Mall theater victimized by the gunman.

Peter, who still lives in Denver, is currently making mission trips and has only been in touch with his younger brother via e-mail."I was in L.A. at the time it happened and my brother Peter who still lives there was on a mission trip and he actually knew several people who were in there,'' said Tebow. "It was sad and tough for everybody.

"It was really tough for Peter and everyone and it was so shocking and saddening to see a city that was so close to me for so many years. I'll always feel a closeness with that area. It was so sad and heartbreaking to see. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims, their families and everybody else that was around something that is so tough to deal with.''
