Tom Coughlin says NY Giants aren't bothered by NY Jets and Tim Tebow; 'You ... - New York Daily News

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Tom Coughlin has joined Eli Manning, John Mara and Steve Tisch in confronting the out of control Timsanity train and doing their best to bring it to a screeching halt.

The Giants appear more amused than threatened by the Jets and their Tim Tebow circus. They likely won’t ever feel threatened — they do have the latest version of the Vince Lombardi Trophy in their possession — but their amusement could soon change to irritation.

ELI WELCOMES TEBOW WITH RING ZING

I asked Coughlin on Wednesday that with the Jets, a non-playoff team with a toxic locker room, getting all the attention, if he ever thinks to himself, “Who won the Super Bowl this year?”

“I don’t,” he said. “You know who won the Super Bowl. You know who the world champions are. Whether we are on the front page every day or not, it’s not that important to me. New Yorkers know.”

That’s about as trash-talking as the politically correct Coughlin will ever get. Leave it to the Jets to bring it out of him.

JACOBS RUNS OFF TO 49ERS AND 1-YEAR DEAL

John Mara got the fun started this week when he suggested that Giants would be having a news conference for recently re-signed backup quarterback David Carr on Monday afternoon, the same time the Jets introduced Tebow. Then co-owner Steve Tisch mentioned he may attend a Jets game this year.

Manning, who never gets into this kind of stuff, told the Daily News on Tuesday night: “I’ve got a little bit more down time before we start our (football) spring training in mid-April. I’ll continue to enjoy this and when we get our rings, I’ll continue to celebrate our championship season.”

It’s Manning vs. the Sanchez-Tebow tagteam. Two rings vs. no rings.

Manning never has to be concerned about coming off the field. In the most recent Super Bowl season, he took every snap. Jets coach Rex Ryan suggested the Wildcat could be run by Tebow one snap a game or 20 snaps a game or somewhere in between.

When Coughlin was asked about taking his starting quarterback off the field for 20 snaps, he answered, “Our guy?”

Coughlin did sound as if he liked Tebow’s game. “Tim Tebow was 7-4. People talk about how he does things, but he has won,” Coughlin said. “He’s physically tough. He has ability as a runner. He continues to work in the throwing game and there are things he does in that aspect better than others. You got a guy who is going to be a force in the locker room, a very positive guy.”

Coughlin was in an upbeat lighthearted mood Wednesday. Two championships will do that. He is discussing a contract extension with the Giants and says, “Quite frankly, it will get done. It’s not like it’s not going to happen.”
