Tim Tebow runs the ball once for 22 yards. The Jets backup doesn't get a second carry.

PITTSBURGH â€" Tim Tebow heard the boos for a second consecutive week, this time from the opposing crowd.

Tebow did not take a snap in the Wildcat until the 8:31 mark of the third quarter, but he seized the chance, scampering for 22 yards.

He jumped up excitedly, and the Pittsburgh fans, remembering his performance in Denver that eliminated the Steelers from the playoffs in January, booed him. On the next snap, Tebow handed off to tailback Joe McKnight and watched him run for 12 yards. Then he handed to Shonn Greene, who lost six yards. It was the last Tebow played on offense as the Jets fell to the Steelers 27-10.

“That kind of puts you behind the stick a little there and obviously at that time you’re out of it,” Rex Ryan said. “I think we need to throw the football in those situations.”

Steelers coaches tracked Tebow’s presence throughout. Tebow reprised his role as the personal punt protector, standing in the backfield twice, but then splitting out wide before a punt near the end of the third quarter. Pittsburgh called a timeout to discuss its approach, then Tebow shifted back to his usual position when the play was finally executed.

“I just go in when they tell me and try to do the best I can in whatever role,” Tebow said. Asked whether he heard chants of his name, Tebow demurred.

“I don’t pay attention or listen to it,” he said.

GETTING PERSONAL
If the Jets are going to delight in safety LaRon Landry’s explosive hits, they are also going to have to live with his reckless penalties.

Landry was flagged for a late hit on Steelers wideout Emmanuel Sanders after the receiver stepped out of bounds at the end of a 19-yard reception. Landry was in pursuit, but did not stop once Sanders was clearly over the line. The penalty was costly as 13 yards were tacked on.

“I’m going to continue to play the way I play,” Landry said. “I just gotta be smarter and use better judgment.”

It was not Landry’s lone infraction. He was also whistled for a horse-collar tackle in the third quarter when he reached for wideout Antonio Brown and pulled him down.

“I love the way he plays and everything, but you have to do it within the confinements of the rules,” Ryan said. “That’s something we really got to look at.”

DUSTIN TIME
How many tight ends does it take to replace an injured Dustin Keller?

Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano employed four tight ends on his unit’s opening drive â€" three on one play â€" as the Jets scored on a 90-yard march. Jeff Cumberland, Konrad Reuland, Dedrick Epps and Jason Smith each took snaps in the position. Reuland caught two passes from quarterback Mark Sanchez for 20 yards.

Keller, who hauled in one ball for seven yards last week, tweaked his right hamstring during practice on Wednesday.

TERMINATED
Fullback John Conner (knee) tweaked the MCL in his right knee and will undergo a precautionary MRI on Monday. . . . Left guard Matt Slauson was taken out of the game briefly, then reinserted. When asked why, he said, “I prefer to let someone else answer that.”
