Tim Tebow foils Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine with 60-yard TD pass against an all ... - New York Daily News (blog)

CORTLAND â€" For the second time in less than a year Tim Tebow got the better of Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine’s defense.

Only this time, he did with his arm â€" not his legs.

Last November, Tebow capped an improbable 95-yard, game-winning drive with a 20-yard touchdown run to beat the Jets. On Wednesday, Ryan and Pettine dialed up another all-out blitz in an 11-on-11 drill… Tebow burned them again. He rolled left â€" just like on the cool Denver night â€" and fired a perfect pass 40 yards in the air to Patrick Turner, who beat Antonio Cromartie and took it in for a 60-yard touchdown.

It was one of two plays that Tebow had with the first-team offensive line on Wednesday.

“Me and Coach Ryan were laughing about it because it was a Blitz Zero look where, regardless of your protection, they’re bringing one more than you can block,” Tebow said after practice. “Same play they ran vs me when I broke contain when we played them last year. So we were laughing about that.”

Ryan later clarified that it was a different type of blitz within the Cover Zero (no safety help) scheme.

It was a bit of payback for Tebow. During Saturday’s scrimmage, Pettine, knowing that defensive players only needed to touch Tebow to stop the play, dialed up some two-man schemes (with two safeties and man coverage underneath). In typical game situations, teams shy away from that scheme against the run-minded Tebow.

Wednesday was easily one of Tebow’s best days in practice. He finished 7 for 11 with two scrambles (and was sacked once) in 11-on011 drills. He also lofted a perfect 50-yard touchdown pass to TE Jeff Cumberland.

The Jets will travel to Cincinnati for their preseason opener on Friday. Tebow is expected to get significant time after Mark Sanchez exits.
