For one year, fans got to argue whether Jeremy Lin or Tim Tebow was the better story. With 2012 in full swing, it's not too late to restart the debate on if either sports celebrity can keep up the pace.
Jimmy Kimmel appearance shows Lin does better with New York Knicks
Being a celebrity is all new to the young point guard from California. After four years at the secluded grounds of Harvard University, he spent his first months in the pros on the street or on a bench. Then half the New York Knicks starters went down with injuries, and in desperation they pushed the Taiwanese-American into the starting lineup. Just like that, quickly and quietly, Linsanity was born. Eight-straight wins later he was a hero who saved the Knicks season while also getting tagged as the best player of Asian descent since Yao Ming retired. In the middle of it all, where many pro athletes can get a swelled head, the devoutly religious Jeremy Lin stayed humble to his roots. He takes greater pride in his charity work and playing with his teammates than doing commercials. Nowhere was that clearer than a recent showing on TV with late show host Jimmy Kimmel. He and Roy Hibbert got tasked via Skype to find the most expensive item in their room they can carry. The ever shy Lin settled for a $20 watch. Not the best choice for an NBA player. It didn't matter. Fans ate it up, showing once again why Lin is so popular. Whether that continues next season depends on where he goes next and what other stories pop up.
New York Jets pale to Taylor Swift rumors when it comes to Tebow
While Lin has a monopoly on New York basketball fans, Tim Tebow arrived from Denver hoping to push quarterback Mark Sánchez for the starting job of the New York Jets. Now under the lights of the Big Apple, Tebowmania is bigger than ever. Anything and everything from his comments to his weight get talked about. For all that attention, nothing gets Tebow fans going more than his growing list of celebrity admirers, particularly the single women like gold medal skier Lindsey Vonn or music sensation Taylor Swift. Where Lin is popular for his unlikely success, Tebow has a natural charisma that everyone from average Joes to A-list celebrities can't help but love. Deciding who will win the hearts of sports fans in 2012 won't matter if neither plays. Watch for the Jets and Knicks coaches to play a huge role in how the debate gets settled.
Jimmy Kimmel and Taylor Swift aside, the true winners of the Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow battle are the New York Knicks and New York Jets. For their own reasons, the two teams should make sure both players don't disappear. If not for their athletic talents, the two have ways of getting fans into seats.
