Tim Tebow Brings ‘Faith’ to Thousands

Okay…I’m not sure if this article is about the NFL or the “Second Coming,” but gosh knows, people are treating it as the latter. No, I’m not being sarcastic (well…maybe a little). But if you were out in the blue sky and brilliant sun of Georgetown, Texas yesterday celebrating Easter Sunday, you would’ve seen a dramatic outpouring of support for a man who everyone knows by now as, Tim Tebow.

Tim arrived and spoke to a crowd of approximately fifteen thousand in an outdoor Easter service, and told everyone who was there that it was truly important to be outspoken when it came to the subject of faith.

The Pastor of the Celebration Church, Joe Champion, is a true Tebow admirer. He said: “In Christianity, it’s the Pope and Tebow right now. We didn’t have enough room to handle the Pope.” Hmm…perhaps this statement was a little too much, you think?

Tim Tebow is an absolute devout Christian, as everyone already knows by now. He is also the NFL quarterback who, as only a backup, has become a cultural hero and phenomenon in the world of sports. In fact, his own ‘flock’ of fans and admirers are growing in numbers every single day. They are absolutely drawn to the man â€" religiously and because he has some skills on that good, old football field.

Tebow did admit that he welcomed the attention that was being brought to Christianity, and even spoke about that ‘prayer pose’ that the media has now dubbed, “Tebowing.” This is when the young man takes a knee on the football field and shows his faith right out there in front of the fans. Tebow likes the fact that it’s being talked about because more and more people can see ‘God’ and understand that prayer and faith are important in, and for, society.

This “Easter on the Hill” celebration was held north of Austin, yet some parishioners who attended drove over a hundred miles or more to hear this NFL backup quarterback speak his mind. There were more than one hundred school buses that kept shuttling people to the mega-church campus, who had waited for their chance to see Tim at local shopping centers and the college campus nearby. (I do have to add in here that the Pope would certainly have drawn more crowds…I hope, so the Pastor was right in saying that Tim is really the only one they could ‘handle.’)

Some Christians, however, may have found this service to be a little ‘out of their element,’ seeing as that Christian rock songs were played, and when Tim actually stood up on stage cheers came from everywhere â€" even from people in the back who were watching him on massive video screens. (A lot like a Bon Jovi concert.) Tim also participated in an interview with the Pastor in order to talk about his faith and how it will play a huge role in his sports career and public life.

Tebow stated: “It’s OK to be outspoken about your faith.” He also did take a slightly unforgiving approach by talking about professional athletes who say constantly that they are not, nor should they be considered role models.

Tebow addressed this by saying: “Yes you are. You’re just not a good one.”

And when he was asked by the Pastor what Tim thought needed to be changed in America, faith was the key to his reply:

“First and foremost is what this country was based on: One nation under God.”

The applause resounded. Christianity, however, and the real ‘message’ of Easter and why they were actually there celebrating, seemed to be an afterthought. Why is that? Because the minute the backup quarterback was done speaking, several hundred people exited (some wearing Tebow jerseys), completely disregarding the fact that the Pastor had not yet given his sermon. Some lifelong fans of other teams even came to offer their support to Tebow, leaving behind their loyalty to the Bronco’s in order to now side with the Jets so they can route for Tim. Just in case you’ve been sleeping, Tim is the quarterback who led the Broncos to the playoffs last season, but was then traded because the once ‘big man on campus,’ Peyton Manning, was brought to Denver. (Who knows? It is possible that the fans are simply waiting for the Broncos to go down in a blaze of fire. Pun intended.)

This crowd included people dressed not only in Jets’ shirts, but also one who was dressed as Elmo. This Sesame Street character took the ‘Tebow’ knee with a toddler in his arms. (No, I’m not trying to be mean, but if you look back at all the highlight reels ever made â€" tons of athletes have struck the exact same pose on and off the field for eons).

In closing, church officials said that they expected  20,000 to appear for the service (I’m thinking that with the Pope as the speaker, an extra five thousand would definitely have been on hand for the ceremony).

There’s something else that should be known here that I found absolutely interesting. Tim is now signed to the sports division of the leading Hollywood agency, CAA, however there’s some fear that this ‘persona’ could jeopardize the wholesome Christian image he’s building. He’s also been turned into a superhero by Marvel Comics. “Super Tim” is the immortal wonder who has already been linked to Taylor Swift and others.

Becoming prey for the paparazzi, an insider recently told FOXNews.com that: “The Jets are trying to limit his endorsements and off the field commitments to ensure his focus remains on the field. If it becomes distracting, it could affect the team.” Another source close to the athlete said that these rumors were “not true.”

Publicist and sportswriter, Angie Meyer, also weighed in by saying: “Athletes who mingle in Hollywood tend to lose both reliability and credibility from teammates, coaches and often times, fans. If Tim Tebow wishes to remain a Christian role model, he must keep a far distance from Hollywood and celebrity…he should stay out of the tabloids completely.” (Quick hint, Tim: In order to do this, definitely stay away from Taylor Swift).

Think of it this way… Tebow, guys and gals, IS the backup quarterback, which means there’s ‘that other guy’ in front of him who will most likely do ALL the playing on that football field unless some kind of injury or disaster strikes. As a good Christian, I pray that it doesn’t.
