Rex Ryan has seen Tim Tebow on the practice field, and the Jets head coach liked what he saw.
Speaking at a charity event on Tuesday night, Ryan told ESPNNewYork.com that Tebow looked âoutstandingâ in limited drills. He was also quick to say incumbent starting quarterback Mark Sanchez looked outstanding as well.
âBoth those guys are in phenomenal shape,â Ryan said.
Under the new collective bargaining agreement, coaches were able to be on the field during player workouts beginning on Monday.
Ryan seemed excited for what new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano has in mind for Tebow. Sparano frequently used Wildcat packages when he was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2008-2011.
âWith Tonyâs background, he has a great vision for Tim, what we want to do with him,â Ryan told ESPNNewYork.com. âItâs exciting to have a young guy that has experience in the playoffs and is learning the system. I think heâs an excellent backup quarterback. I think heâs an outstanding football player. Weâll see what we can come up with.â
Sanchez is coming off a season in which he set career-highs in completion percentage (56.7), passing yards (3,474) and touchdown passes (26). However, Sanchez came under fire for his performance down the stretch last season as the Jets lost their final three games to miss the playoffs.
The Jets have stated several times Sanchez is the starter, and the team plans to work Tebow onto the field in a wide variety of ways.
